Fossil-free ski resort
In winter 2024, we set a clear goal: to operate a ski facility entirely without fossil fuels. The goal has now been achieved at Hammarbybacken, where the entire facility operates with electrified systems. Work continues at our other destinations – including Sälen, where several new electric vehicles have been introduced and pilot projects for battery storage are underway.
Electrified operations at Hammarbybacken
Hammarbybacken is now our first ski facility where all operations are electrified. The transition is an important step in reducing our use of fossil fuels and developing more sustainable ways of working across our business.
Project results and insights
The initiative has shown that transitioning to electrified operations at a ski facility is possible in practice. At the same time, the work has provided valuable experience in technology, operations and infrastructure, and helped us identify challenges that need to be addressed as we continue the transition at our other destinations. The experience from Hammarbybacken forms an important foundation for the next steps in our work.
Electrified vehicle fleet
A key part of the transition has been replacing the entire vehicle fleet at Hammarbybacken. The facility’s work vehicles now run on electricity, contributing to reduced emissions and more sustainable day-to-day operations.
Our electric vehicle fleet at Hammarbybacken
- 2 snowmobiles (Taiga Motors "Nomad")
- 1 snow groomer (Prinoth E-motion Husky)
- 1 wheel loader (Volvo L25 Electric from Volvo CE)
- 1 vehicle (VW ID Buzz Cargo)
- 1 ATV (Polaris Ranger EV)
Charging is provided via a Power Unit battery (PU500), a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), supplied by Volvo Energy and Volvo CE. Service provider for Volvo’s products is Swecon Anläggningsmaskiner AB.
To enable the initiative, an electricity agreement has been signed for all operations with certified renewable electricity via Vattenfall, as well as grid connection via Ellevio.
Electrification and energy storage at additional facilities
The electrification of Hammarbybacken is part of a broader effort to develop more sustainable and resource-efficient facilities. An important element of this work is energy storage, particularly during the winter season when demand on the electricity grid is high.
During the winter season, an 860 kWh battery storage system has been installed in Hundfjället. The battery works together with charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and enables more efficient energy use, reduced peak demand and optimisation of our own electricity consumption.
