Train travel is a comfortable and more sustainable way to reach the mountains – in winter and summer alike. Here you’ll find an overview of how to travel by train to SkiStar’s resorts, and how the journey works depending on your destination.
Travel by train to SkiStar’s resorts
You can travel by train to several of SkiStar’s ski resorts. Depending on your destination, the train either takes you all the way to the resort area, or to the nearest station with an onward transfer to the mountains.
Many international visitors combine train with an additional mode of transportation when travelling to the mountains. You can fly to cities such as Stockholm or Oslo and continue the journey northbound by train towards the ski resorts.

Taking the train to the mountains
Travelling by train is a relaxed and scenic way to start your mountain holiday. Depending on the destination, you can travel by day or night train, either directly to the resort area or with an onward transfer from the nearest station.
Train tickets are released throughout the year ahead of upcoming seasons, making it possible to plan both winter ski trips and summer mountain holidays.
Snälltåget to the mountains
Snälltåget operates seasonal services to the mountains, mainly during the winter season. For travel to Sälen, you arrive in Mora where a transfer to the resort area is included in the journey.
SJ trains to the mountains
SJ operates both day and night trains to the mountains during several parts of the year. Night trains are a convenient option if you prefer to travel overnight and arrive early in the morning.
How the train journey works
The exact journey depends on the resort and where you start your trip. Many international visitors combine flights with train and bus connections to reach the mountains.
Typical routes include flying to Stockholm or Oslo and continuing the journey by train towards the ski resorts.
Direct by train
Åre can be reached directly by train from several Swedish cities, including Stockholm.
Train plus onward transfer
Some resorts require an additional transfer from the nearest railway station:
- Sälen: train to Mora, followed by a transfer bus to the resort (approx. 2–2.5 hours).
- Trysil: train to Elverum from Oslo, then a bus connection to Trysil.
- Hemsedal: train to Gol from Oslo or Bergen, followed by a bus transfer to the resort.
Good to know
- Ski equipment: baggage rules and seat reservations may vary between operators.
- Transfers and connections: if your journey includes an onward connection, it’s wise to allow extra time between trains and transfers.
- Night trains: you may arrive early in the morning – check the check-in time at your accommodation.
