Väggen – one of Sweden’s steepest slopes
Väggen in Hundfjället, Sälen, is one of Sweden’s steepest and most talked-about ski slopes. It offers a serious challenge – even for experienced skiers. Are you ready?
Väggen in Hundfjället is Sälen’s most legendary slope
Väggen is more than just a ski run – it’s an icon in the Sälen mountains. It was built when Hundfjället began to take shape and has long been known as Sweden’s steepest slope. Even today, it holds legendary status. Standing at the top and watching the slope drop straight down is a heart-pounding experience.

How steep is Väggen?
“Väggen” truly lives up to its name. From the bottom, it looks almost vertical – like a wall – thanks to its extreme incline (up to approx. 45° at the steepest section).
It’s marked as a black run, which means the highest difficulty level – only for advanced skiers. The slope is relatively wide and consistently steep all the way down, with no flat sections. This gives a strong sense of speed from top to bottom.
Väggen is about 500 meters long with a vertical drop of around 200 meters. That makes it one of the steepest descents in the Sälen area – and in all of Sweden.
How is Väggen groomed?
Väggen is carefully groomed and usually open when conditions are safe. Due to the steepness, grooming machines must use winches to avoid sliding on the 45-degree slope.
During peak season, the slope is well maintained, but when the surface is hard, it can be icy – extra challenging even for skilled skiers. Väggen has no lighting and is normally only open during daylight hours. In heavy snowfall or windy conditions, the slope may be temporarily closed for avalanche safety and grooming.

Fastest way to Väggen
The easiest way to reach Väggen is via the Väggen lift (Väggenbanan, lift H1), which runs from the base up to the start of the slope.
The East Express chairlift (H2) from Hundfjällstorget in Hundfjället also takes you to the top, from where you can reach Väggen via a short connecting trail.
“Uppåt Väggen” – an annual Easter tradition
The slope’s iconic reputation is celebrated every Easter with the spectacular event Uppåt Väggen. On Easter Saturday, brave participants gather to first run up the slope on foot and then race down on skis or snowboards – as fast as possible.
This prestigious and crowd-pleasing competition – with categories for children, youth and adults – has become a beloved tradition in Hundfjället. The atmosphere is electric as spectators cheer on the racers in this unique uphill-downhill challenge.
