How to enjoy a more budget-friendly mountain holiday

If you're looking for a more affordable ski trip or mountain getaway and want to cut costs – check out our tips!

Planning is key to staying within budget

Think ahead and plan – those are the guiding principles for saving money on your ski holiday. Book early, look for deals, and travel outside of school holidays if possible. To save on accommodation, consider staying a bit further from the slopes and sharing lodging with family and friends.

You don’t need to buy brand-new equipment – look for second-hand options or rent your gear on-site. Remember, it’s often cheaper to pre-book your rental online. If you need to top up with something new, SkiStarshop is there for you.

10 tips for a more affordable mountain holiday

2. Save even more with SkiStar Member

3. Keep an eye on the website and your email

At skistar.com, we post the latest offers, such as affordable last-minute deals. We also send out offers in newsletters to our members, so make sure you become a member and keep an eye on both the website and your email inbox. You can find all our current offers here »

4. Find the right time

Choose a period when there are no school holidays and go for a short week – Sunday to Thursday. During January and March, there are fewer people and more space on the slopes, while accommodation is usually cheaper.

5. Stay in the outskirts

You can find good accommodation a little further away from our ski areas and thus reduce the price. It is often only a few minutes' drive to the ski slopes. To be extra kind to both the environment and your wallet, you can leave your car behind and take the ski bus to the slopes instead. The ski bus is free for everyone with a valid SkiPass.

6. Share accommodation

Renting a large cottage or apartment and sharing it with the whole family or perhaps several other families significantly reduces the price per person. See the full range of large cottages in the mountains »

7. Book online in advance

SkiPass, ski school and ski rental are always cheapest online, so save both time and money by booking your products in advance at skistar.com or in the SkiStar app. You can either top up your SkiPass or pre-book and collect it from one of our SkiPass pick-up machines.

Value packages with area passes

We also offer value packages in Klövsjö/Storhogna and Högfjället in Sälen, where an area pass is included. With this pass, you get access to the entire ski area and free ski bus during your stay.

Short week at Högfjället in Sälen. From EUR 163,50 per person
Short Week in Klövsjö/Storhogna. From EUR 183,50 per person

8. Hire equipment

Renting ski equipment is affordable and also guarantees that your skis are freshly sharpened and ready for the slopes when you arrive. Our ski rentals are always located close to the slopes, making it easy to swap, change or get help.

9. Group ski school benefits everyone

Enrolling your children in group ski school contributes to a more rewarding holiday for the whole family. The children learn to ski from skilled ski instructors while making friends and creating memorable mountain experiences to take home with them. For you as a parent, the children's ski school means some well-deserved time to yourself during the holiday.

10. Eat on a budget

Cook at home in your cottage or apartment and bring soup or stew in a thermos for a quick and inexpensive meal. Sausages and bread are also popular with many and can be easily prepared at one of the cosy barbecue areas near the slopes.

Don't forget to bring hot chocolate or coffee to warm you up after a few hours out in the snow. If you get tired of cooking, there are plenty of affordable restaurants nearby.
