How we travel affects the environment

A large share of skiing holiday-related emissions come from travelling to and from our destinations. On a positive note, you as a guest have a great opportunity to join us in our sustainability efforts, and you can have an impact solely through your choice of transport. We want to help you along the way.

Today, most people (86%) travel by car to and from our destinations, but SkiStar wants to provide more ways to get to us. Together we can reduce emissions!

Challenges

There are many challenges to more fossil-free travel. Unfortunately, the roads are not always of the best quality, the trains don’t always run on time and flying has a major climate impact.

We want to showcase our initiatives to facilitate more fossil-free travel to our destinations.

Green road to Sälen

Destination Sälenfjällen has designed a map of the green road with the car charging infrastructure from Västerås/Stockholm and on up through Västerdalarna. The map shows the location of stations for charging electric cars close to toilets, and places to stop for snacks or something to eat on the way to or from Sälen.

Travel by train

Together with Malung-Sälen municipality and Destination Sälenfjällen we are working to influence politicians and decision-makers so that we get trains that run all the way to Sälen. We are also proposing that night trains e.g. to Åre are upgraded and that train tickets are released earlier in order for our guests to be able to plan and book their trip on time.

Travelling by electric car

During the spring half-terms in 2021/2022 and 2022/2023, we set up mobile charging stations for electric cars in Ljusdal and Sveg in collaboration with external partners, as we identified these places as hubs for our guests. We are proud that our temporary charging stations have inspired municipalities and companies to invest in permanent electric car chargers in these areas.

Travelling by bus

Carpooling is a way for you to reduce the climate impact of your travel. In an effort to get more people to travel together, we are investing in weekend getaways. For the 23/24 winter season, weekend getaways are available to Vemdalen and Hemsedal. Once you have enough seats, the ski bus will take you wherever you need to go and is free for those with a SkiPass.

Did you know that...

Our buses are powered by the renewable fuel HVO100, which has less climate footprint than diesel or gasoline. Read more about our use of renewable fuels.
