Project SIKTA

The SIKTA project was carried out during the winter of 2025/26, when we became the first to test an electric self-driving bus in a mountain environment. The bus operated between Hundfjället and Tandådalen in Sälen as a ski bus and provided valuable insights into autonomous transportation in winter conditions.

First self-driving bus in a mountain environment

As part of our 2030 sustainability goal, we explore the needs of our guests and the new opportunities and solutions available for future transportation. Our aim is to increase accessibility and reduce dependence on private cars at our destinations.

The bus was tested as a ski bus during the winter of 2025/26

At SkiStar, we participated in the project as a test partner and to gain valuable experience. During the test phase, the autonomous electric bus operated on a route between Hundfjället and Tandådalen in Sälen.

The test meant that we were the first in the world to allow an autonomous bus to operate in a mountain environment, that is, in winter conditions with snow.

The self-driving bus e-ATAK

The SIKTA project used an electric bus called e-ATAK, manufactured by the major bus and vehicle manufacturer Karsan in Turkey.

Karsan produces a wide range of buses and also manufactures vehicles for other brands, including Renault.

SIKTA – a collaboration for the future of public transport

SIKTA is a project that started in early 2025 and runs until 2027. SIKTA stands for Sälen Idre Kollektiv Trafik Autonom. It is a collaboration between municipalities, businesses, technology providers, and Dalarna University.

The purpose of the project is to demonstrate that autonomous electric buses can help increase service frequency and contribute to sustainable development.
