Circulate more – rent both skis and clothing for your skiing trip
We live in a consumer society and there is a lot of talk about consumerism and overconsumption. Recent figures from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency show that we have produced enough clothing to last six generations. We all need to become better at circularity, reuse and recycling what we already have.
7 circular tips for your mountain trip
- Rent your ski equipment instead of buying it – equipment such as skis, boots and helmets can be rented instead of bought new. Many ski resorts also offer clothing rental – you can rent your ski clothing from us in Hundfjället, Sälen.
- Repair instead of throwing away – check your equipment in advance. Replacing broken zips and waterproofing ski clothing will extend its life.
- Second-hand and reuse – ski clothing and equipment are often in good condition on the second-hand market.
- Donate or sell equipment – if you no longer need it, let someone else benefit from it.
- Return rented equipment in good condition – this increases its lifespan and allows it to continue to be used.
- Care for and store correctly – clean and store clothing and equipment properly to reduce the need for new purchases.
- Choose better quality clothing that lasts longer – the longer you use an item, the better it is for the environment.
Renting equipment and clothing is becoming increasingly popular
Renting ski equipment instead of buying it is a natural part of a skiing holiday for many people, as the statistics show. During the 2023/24 season, we rented out 365,000 ski packages (+4.1%) at Skistar, which corresponds to 4,170 tonnes in reduced emissions, and we are now preparing for an increase.
A good way to try out a product
‘We believe in sharing as an alternative to ownership, and in addition to reducing overconsumption, renting is a perfect way to try out a product. Last year, we launched a second-hand sale of skis and bikes, which exceeded expectations, and the concept will be expanded for the coming season,’ says Fanny Sjödin, Sustainability Manager at SkiStar.
Rent your ski clothing and travel lighter
Since 2023, it has also been possible to rent ski clothing in Hundfjället, Sälen. Renting ski clothing on site reduces unnecessary purchases, our guests travel lighter with less luggage, and if you forget something at home, it is easy and convenient to rent instead of buying new.
"We want to help our guests reduce their climate impact as much as possible, and this year we are expanding our range. In Hundfjället, Sälen, we rent ski jackets and trousers for children (sizes 110/116–158/164) and adults (sizes XS–XXL) from the brand EQPE.

Did you know that...
- Renting a ski package instead of buying one generates 11.5 kg less emissions.
- There are ski workshops at every destination, so try giving your skis a refresh before you decide to buy new ones. Sharpened edges and refreshed bases extend the life of your skis.
- The most important measure for reducing the environmental impact of textile consumption is to extend the life of textile products that have already been manufactured.
