Skagsvola – hike across the mountain ridge

Walk one of Trysil’s most popular hiking trails across Skagsvola, the striking mountain ridge west of Engeren. The route offers wide views, an airy mountain feel and a well-prepared trail through varied terrain.

Skagsvola is a circular hike for those who want a mountain walk with a clear highlight. The route climbs up to the striking mountain ridge west of Engeren, where you get beautiful views of the lake, forest and mountain areas around Trysil.

Across the mountain ridge

The highlight of the hike is the walk across the Skagsvola ridge itself. Here, the trail runs through open mountain terrain with wide views in several directions. At the highest point, the ridge is wider before narrowing further north.

Parts of the ridge have an airy feel, with steep sides and views down towards Engeren. Where the ridge is at its narrowest, there are easier alternative routes, making it possible to choose a less exposed variant.

Surface and level

The trail is T-marked and well prepared, but the hike is still graded red due to its length, elevation difference and some more demanding sections. Along the way, you will encounter trail, boardwalks, rocky sections and some more challenging terrain. Good hiking shoes or mountain boots are recommended.

A popular hike in sensitive terrain

Skagsvola is a popular hiking destination, and the trail has been prepared to handle a high number of visitors. Stay on the marked trail and use boardwalks and prepared sections where available. This protects the vegetation and improves the experience for everyone who comes after you.

Practical information

The hike starts from the parking area in Brunnsdalen by Engerneset, north of Trysil. The circular route is 8.3 kilometres long, has 260 metres of elevation gain and takes around 2.5–3 hours, depending on pace, breaks and conditions.
