Plan your drive to the mountains
Travelling by car gives you the freedom to choose your route, departure time and stops along the way. It can be particularly convenient if you are travelling together or want plenty of room for luggage and ski equipment.
If you are driving from continental Europe, combining the journey with a ferry can reduce the amount of time you spend behind the wheel.
When another way of travelling may be easier
For longer journeys, it is worth comparing the car with flying to the mountains or travelling by train. During winter, trains from southern Sweden continue towards Åre, Jämtland and Härjedalen, with onward connections to Vemdalen. Sälen can also be reached by train to Mora with a connecting bus.
Driving in winter
Check the weather, road conditions and that your car is properly equipped for winter before setting off. Conditions on mountain roads can change quickly, so allow plenty of time for the journey.
Electric cars and travelling together
If you are travelling by electric car, plan charging stops for the full journey and check the charging options at your accommodation before you leave.
If several people are travelling together, sharing the car makes better use of the journey and can make a long drive easier.
Leave the car behind when you arrive
Once you reach the resort, you may not need the car every day. During winter, ski buses make it easy to travel between accommodation, the slopes and resort centres, and many places to stay are close to the skiing.
