Lördagsgraven – challenging mountain hike in Sälen

A black 17 km circular hike from Högfjället. The trail crosses Östfjället and Källfjället, continues towards Syndalen and returns through Lördagsgraven.

Lördagsgraven is a long and challenging circular route that begins and ends at Högfjällshotellet. The trail passes through both forest and open mountain terrain and suits anyone looking for a more demanding hike in Sälen.

The route is approximately 17 km long and graded black. It requires good fitness, mountain experience and confidence over long sections of varied and partly steep terrain.

Across Östfjället and Källfjället

From Högfjället, the first section of the trail follows the same route as Östfjällsrundan across Östfjället and on towards Källfjället. Here, you move through open mountain terrain with fine views across the landscape around Sälen.

The surface varies between mountain trail, rockier sections and wetter ground. Adjust your pace to the terrain and be prepared for some sections to take longer than the distance suggests.

Källfjällsstugan and Syndalen

When you descend towards Källfjällsstugan, the trail turns off towards Syndalen and Syndalsstugan. This is a good part of the route for a longer break before continuing.

Bring enough water and a packed lunch for the full hike. This is a long circular route without lift access, so plan the day according to the weather, daylight and your own experience.

Returning through Lördagsgraven

The return route passes through Lördagsgraven between Källfjället and Flatfjället. Here, the hike has a more remote mountain feel, with quiet nature, forest sections and open views. The final section of the route connects with Östfjällsrundan again.

Please note that the trail is steep in some places. Take extra care on wet surfaces and wear shoes with good grip.

The trail follows mountain paths through open mountain terrain, forest and more undulating sections. The surface may be rocky, uneven and wet after rain.

The black grading means that this hike is for experienced hikers. Allow a full day in the mountains and bring clothing, food and equipment suited to rapidly changing mountain weather.
