Hundfjällslingan – challenging mountain hike in Sälen
Experience a longer and more challenging mountain hike in Sälen. Hundfjällslingan takes you through old forest, over open mountain terrain, and up to Hundfjället with wide views. The hike is approximately 12 km as a round trip.
Hike on the Hundfjällslingan from Tandådalsstjärn
The hike starts at Tandådalsstjärn along Highway 66, where there is parking and a clear trailhead. After about 2 km, the trail continues toward Hundfjällskölen and Skogsäterstugan.
Here you can choose which direction to continue. The most common route goes toward the Hundfjället ski area and makes for a loop of about 12–12.5 km.
From Skogsäterstugan, the hike continues with a steep and demanding climb up toward Hundfjället. At the top, you are rewarded with great views in all directions. [alltrails.com]
The trail then descends toward the Hundfjället facilities. From there, you follow Highway 66 back to the starting point at Tandådalsstjärn.
Surface and terrain
The hike goes through varied terrain, with sections in old forest, mountain heath, and open areas. The surface varies between clearly marked trail and more uneven terrain.
The climb up toward Hundfjället is steep and makes the hike physically demanding. Some sections may be wet or muddy, especially after rain.
Although the trail is well marked, the markings end at the summit. This is a more demanding hike that is best suited for those in good shape and with some experience in mountain hiking.
Starting point and loop
The start and finish are at Tandådalsstjärn, along Highway 66. There are parking options near the trailhead.
