Hike Vertikal K in Åre

Vertikal K is one of Åre’s toughest hiking challenges. The trail starts at Åre torg and climbs to Åreskutan summit, with approximately 1,084 metres of elevation gain over 5.6 km.

This is a black and highly demanding summit hike for those with very good fitness, mountain experience and confidence on steep and technical terrain. Vertikal K is shorter than many other hikes in Åre, but considerably steeper.

From Åre torg straight up the mountain

The route starts at Åre torg and takes you up through steep terrain towards Åreskutan summit. This is not a gentle mountain hike, but a physical challenge where the elevation gain comes quickly.

The surface can be uneven, rocky and technical. Adjust your pace according to the terrain, weather and your own energy levels, and expect your heart rate to rise early in the hike.

A vertical kilometre

Vertikal K is what is known as a vertical kilometre. This means you climb around 1,000 metres of elevation over a relatively short distance.

The trail is steep, intense and requires strength, endurance and secure footing. Some sections can feel almost like climbing, especially as the terrain becomes rockier higher up.

Shorter option to Hummeln

To try a shorter option, you can choose to hike a half vertical kilometre up towards Mörvikshummeln and Hummelstugan. It still gives you a steep and clear challenge, but without having to continue all the way to Åreskutan summit.

The shorter option is a good choice if you want to get a feel for the climb, while keeping the hike more contained.

Weather, season and trail markings

Vertikal K is best from midsummer to the beginning of October. Earlier in the season, the trail may only be partly signposted, and you may need to navigate on your own.

The weather can quickly affect how demanding the trail is. In rain, wet conditions or poorer visibility, the steep and technical sections become considerably more challenging.

Please note that the trail may be affected by snow cover early and late in the season. During spring and early summer, the ground may also be particularly sensitive, so always check the current trail status before setting out.

Return from the summit

Vertikal K is described as a summit hike from Åre torg to Åreskutan summit. Once you reach the summit, you need to plan how to get back down.

When Kabinbanan is open, it can be an option for transport down from the summit area. If you want to hike down towards Åre village, the Western trail can be an option, preferably together with the digital guide.

Remember that hiking downhill can also be demanding on knees, ankles and balance, especially on steep, rocky or wet terrain. Always check current lift opening hours and trail status before setting out.
