Fröåtjärn is an easy and family-friendly hike in Åre that starts in Björnen and takes you to a peaceful tarn with views towards Åreskutan. The trail is approximately 1 km long, rated green and is a good choice if you want a short and easily accessible hike.

This is a lovely outing for families, beginners and anyone who wants to combine a short walk with coffee, a break or a moment by the water.

From Björnen to Fröåtjärn

The hike starts in Björnen and follows a gravel road towards Fröåtjärn. After around 20 minutes of walking, you reach the tarn, where the mountain setting opens up and the view towards Åreskutan comes into sight.

The road is shared with others moving through the area, such as cyclists, hikers and riders. Show consideration, stay aware of your surroundings and adjust your pace to the surface.

Barbecue area, swimming and a break by the water

At Fröåtjärn, you can stop for a break by the water. There is a barbecue area here, and the spot is ideal for coffee, a packed lunch or a peaceful moment with views towards the mountain.

On warm days, the tarn may also be tempting for a swim. Please remember that swimming is at your own risk and that conditions can vary with the weather and season.

An easily accessible hike for more people

Fröåtjärn is one of the easier hikes in Åre and is a good choice when you want a shorter outing without any major elevation gain. The gentle ascent makes the hike easy to adapt to your energy level and group.

As the trail follows a gravel road, it can also work well with a pushchair, depending on the weather and surface conditions.

Weather, season and trail marking

Fröåtjärn is best from Midsummer to early October. Early in the season, the road may be wet or partly affected by snow, depending on the weather and ground conditions.

In spring and early summer, the ground can be particularly sensitive, so always check the current trail status before setting off.

The hike starts in Björnen and goes to Fröåtjärn. It is approximately 1 km long and has around 23 metres of elevation gain.

Allow around 1–2 hours, depending on pace, breaks and how long you want to stay by the tarn. Bring water, something to eat, clothing suitable for the weather and swimwear on warm days.
