Hiking and running in Åre

Take the lift up and hike on Åreskutan. There are both trails that are easy enough to walk with younger children and tougher tours that are a real challenge for the thigh muscles.

Take the lift to the hike

The lift system makes the mountain accessible to more people even in summer. Your hike in the mountains will be shorter, you'll get up to the beautiful views and mountain environment of the mountain faster, and you'll save yourself a few metres of altitude in your legs. Almost all hiking trails in Åre can be simplified with a lift ride, either up or down.

Find your way with the digital trail map for Åre

The digital trail map on aretrails.com is your ultimate guide before and during your hike in Åre. The map shows all trails for hiking, trail running and cycling with number, name, length, gradient, time estimate, difficulty level and descriptive information about each trail.

Depending on the trail you choose to hike, different lifts are suitable as means of transport. Choose a trail or destination using the hiking and running trail map:

Keep the lifts in mind

Keep an eye on the opening times of the lifts and be aware that the lifts may close quickly due to weather conditions, such as thunderstorms or wind, or for technical reasons. Some lifts are only open during the high season. Always be prepared to go down.

Watch out for cyclists

In the central parts of the Åre lift system, walkers and runners mix with downhill cyclists and work vehicles. Pay attention to warning signs, around crests and curves and stick to the marked hiking trails. These are marked with ‘white-orange-white’ paint on, for example, wooden posts, trees and rocks. All trails have a number that is labelled on metal signs along the trail.

Our top five tips for mountain hiking

  1. Plan your hike: Find out as much as you can about the trail you want to hike - how long it is, what the terrain looks like, whether it passes places to eat or shop on the way. The more you know about the trail, the better you can prepare and pack for your hike.
  2. Have the right equipment: The equipment you need depends on the type of hike you're planning to do, but you can never go wrong with a pair of proper hiking boots, windproof and waterproof clothing, as well as a backpack with water and something edible.
  3. Dress for unexpected weather: The weather can change quickly when hiking in the mountains, so always pack windproof and waterproof clothing, even if the sun is shining when you're about to set off.
  4. Adjust your speed: Take it easy and adapt your speed to the terrain and your physical ability. Take regular breaks to rest and don't forget to enjoy the views along the hiking trail.
  5. Respect the nature: Show consideration for the environment and wildlife by leaving minimal trails behind you.
