Hiking and running in Åre

Take the lift up and hike on the Åreskutan mountain! Here you'll find trails easy enough for you to walk with young children or harder trails that really challenge your thigh muscles.

The lift system makes the mountain accessible to more people, even in the summer. Using the lift system will reduce the trail distance and quickly get you up the mountain to the beautiful views and mountain environment past the tree line without exerting your legs unnecessarily. Almost all our trails can be made easier by using the lifts, either on the way up or down.

Depending on which trail you choose there are different lifts that you can use. Choose a trail or destination using the hiking and trail running map:

Trail map (PDF)

Make sure to keep an eye on the opening hours for the lifts and be aware that the lifts can close on short notice due to weather, e.g. thunder or wind, or due to technical reasons. Some lifts are only open during high season. Always be prepared to have to walk down.

On the Åre Trails website you will find all trails for hiking, trail running and biking in one single place along with number, name, distance, elevation, time estimates, difficulty level and trail description.

How fast do I walk?
Weather, physical ability, breaks and unexpected events can significantly change the estimated time. Take this into consideration when planning your hike.

WATCH OUT for cyclists!
In the central parts of Åre's lift system, hikers and runners share the trails with downhill bikers and work vehicles. Pay attention to warning signs, around crests and bends and make sure you stick to the marked hiking trails. These are marked with 'white-orange-white' markings on wooden posts, trees and stones. All trails have a number that is included on signs along the trail.

Summit tour

The combination of the lifts VM8 (Å22) and the Gondolen (H23) take you high up the mountain, almost all the way to the summit of Åreskutan. Enjoy the magnificent views from the mountain stations of the lifts and walk a short distance around the area. This hike is suitable for baby buggies because you can take the lift both up and down. However, the surface up by the Gondolen mountain station can be a little bit challenging.

Stop off for a coffee break or lunch at Base Camp, Sweden's highest restaurant which is an entire 1,274 metres above sea level, or stop off halfway at the VM8 mountain station and visit the Svartberget restaurant and our new Skills area for cyclists of all ages.
