About skiing for the disabled
Sitskis – who can use a sitski? If a person is paralysed from the waist down, but can sit without back support and has normal muscle function in the chest, shoulders, neck and arms, then a sitski is OK. You should also have good balance and upper body strength. A person who has had one or both legs amputated can also use a sitski satisfactorily. A helmet is a must during sitski lessons with us; if you don’t have one, you can borrow one from us. Warm clothes and boots should be worn. Gloves with fingers are recommended. At the first lesson the sitski will be adapted to the pupil and this can take up an hour of the first lesson. We have two adult sitskis and one child’s sitski.
Dimensions of adult sitski: 38 cm wide seat 25 cm high at back 55 cm long from back to front
Dimensions of child sitski: 28 cm wide 15 cm high at back 35 cm long from back to front
What’s a skicart and who can use one? In a skicart the person sits in a curved seat, which has four skis. The front skis can be steered with one’s hands. The rider can also receive assistance with the steering from someone else (instructor or co-skier with a licence) if he or she cannot manage by themselves. There are also “pedals” enabling the rider to steer with his/her feet. NB! The pedals must be booked in advance, as we have to order foot steering.
A skicart is best suited to those with more extensive physical disability or persons with learning difficulties. They are also suitable for persons who are completely paralysed. In this case a ski instructor or skier with a licence can steer the skicart for them. Age is not a factor.
Dimensions of skicart 35 cm back width 38 cm bottom width The skicart can also be used by a child if we insert padding. To drive a skicart you must have a skicart licence. If not, you must ride with a specially trained ski instructor. If you have a licence, you MUST bring it with you when you wish to hire the skicart.
Taking your skicart licence You ride together with a ski instructor with a skicart instructor’s licence. Bear in mind that tuition can take up to four full days plus a driving test, depending on the skiing ability of the licence candidate. You can take your licence for green, blue or red runs, meaning that if you have a green licence you can only ride on green runs, with a blue licence on blue runs etc. It isn’t possible to take a black licence. You can take the licence yourself or let a co-skier take it. He/she will then steer the skicart with the aid of sidebars. Warm clothes and boots are essential. Mittens are recommended. The skicart licence should be brought along by the pupil him/herself if possible. The skicart is adapted as required during the first lesson, and this can take up an hour of the lesson. We have two skicarts.
