The first people to find their way into the mountain regions back in the 700s were hunters and fishermen. Sälen was the most northerly inhabited district of the parish right up until the 1700s. The name Sälen derives from the word “säl” or “sel”, which means “shack” in the Malungsmål dialect. In the 1920s, a railway was built to Sälen and the mountains began to be used for the tourist industry. Sälenstugan and the Högfjällshotel were tourist buildings that one travelled to by horse and sleigh or carriage.
