Safety on the slopes

We in Åre and the SLAO (Swedish Skilift Association) together provide information about how we make winter holidays a fun experience for everyone. Below we reproduce the ten most important traffic rules on the ski slopes and a couple of specific regulations that apply to our locations.

Traffic rules for downhill skiers
1.    Be attentive – show consideration
Behave in such a way that you don’t risk injuring anyone else.
2.    Adjust your speed and skiing technique to the terrain, equipment,
weather and your own skiing ability.
3.    Choose the right skiing direction!
If you’re coming down from the top you must keep clear of skiers
        ahead of  you.
4.    Leave space when overtaking!
Keep a big enough distance that skiers who are overtaken have
        enough room.
5.    Set off cautiously!
Check both upwards and downwards that the run is free before
        you start  skiing.
6.    Only stop where you can be seen!
If you have to stop – do it where you are clearly visible and where
others can ski round you. If you’re going downhill – leave the run
       free as soon as possible.
7.     Climb up to the side of the run
         - especially in poor visibility.
8.     Pay heed to signs!
Regulations and instructions on the runs are there for your
well-being and   the well-being of others. Follow them!
9.    Render assistance!
You must render assistance in the event of an accident.
10. Give your name and address!
If you are involved in an accident, you must give your name and
        address.

The European Health Insurance Card makes it easier for people from the European Union’s 27 Member States plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland to access health care services during temporary visits abroad.

So, if you are going on holiday, a business trip or a short break or are heading off to study abroad, remember to make sure that you have obtained a card. It will help save you time, hassle and money if you fall ill or suffer an injury while abroad.
